SPARS Member Studio at the Palms records session with Dave Matthews and Producer Rob Cavallo...

When an artist has their own studio you never think you'll ever have a chance to have them request studio time from you. The staff DAVE MATTHEWS AND GAVIN MALOOF...at Studio on the Palms were ever so surprised when they got a call that the Dave Matthews Band needed studio time for a few days.

While stopping through Vegas at the beginning of their tour Matthews and the band, along with producer Rob Cavallo, put the finishing touches  on Big Whiskey & the Groo Grux King. Studio owner Gavin Maloof stopped by to say hello with his Les Paul in tow. Dave liked the guitar so much Gavin gave it to him!

SPARS Member, legendary Founder and Past President, Joe Tarsia was recently featured in an article discussing the history of the recording industry, his participation in the making of the "Philly Sound" and the digital recording revolution...

Tara Murtha, Entertainment writer for the Philadelphia Weekly recently interviewed one of the original founders CLICK TO READ MORE...of SPARS and its first President, Joe Tarsia, about his participation in the industry and the changes that have occurred over the years in the way music is created. Tarsia owned the legendary Philadelphia studio, Sigma Sound, which for almost 50 years was responsible for 150 gold and platinum records as well as greatly contributing to the "Philly Sound," so popular during the era.

On a side note, Joe's son, Mike Tarsia also worked at Sigma Sound for years doing sessions, culminating in running the facility up until it was sold. He, like his father, was also a Past President of the Board of Directors. Today, Mike is President of Mike Tarsia Recording, www.miketarsia.com.

"In the 1950s, Joe Tarsia was a young man with a natural knack for tech wizardry and a young wife to support. Legend has it that one day, while working in the research department for Philco. and moonlighting at night as a television repairman, Tarsia was called to fix a tape recorder in a studio from where, so the story goes, he never left. He went to become chief engineer at Cameo-Parkway Records before founding Sigma Sound Studios in 1968, where he manned the console for the majority of signature Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell studio sessions." (quote from Murtha's article)

Red Truck Films teams with SPARS Member, Blazing Music+Sound, on Award-Winning Spot for Wake Enterprises...

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 14, 2009) – A :30 television spot and multiple radio spots produced by Red Truck Films and Blazing MusicWAKE ENTERPRISES SPOT...+Sound for non-profit Wake Enterprises won first place in the category of Public Service Campaign in the American Advertising Federation's (AAF) 2009 Club Achievement Awards.

The TV spot was shot at the Golden Belt in Durham, N.C., on the RED camera, a high performance digital cine camera with the quality of 35mm film and convenience of pure digital.

The campaign features real people who are employees of Wake Enterprises, a private, non-profit organization that supports vocational and social development of adults with developmental disabilities. The TV spot can be viewed at http://redtruckfilms.com/wetv.html.

The Wake Enterprises campaign – which includes TV, radio, print, outdoor and interactive media – was spearheaded by the AAF Raleigh-Durham Chapter. It was judged against other AAF member work based on effective use of advertising techniques to support programs on behalf of public interests and/or community betterment. The project was a joint effort on the part of many creative professionals throughout the region.Red Truck Films executive producer, Cathy Wilson, worked with director and editor, Josh Steadman, on the spot, with photography provided by Christopher Wilson. Blazing Music+Sound provided music and audio production for the TV and radio spots, with Eric Johnson as executive producer and Aaron Keane as composer and sound engineer.

"There were an incredible number of moving parts to this project, said Mike Allen, president of the AAF-RDU chapter and creative director at Craig Jackson & Partners, "not the least of which was coordinating the schedules of the Wake Enterprises clients, arranging a shoot location, arranging travel for the clients to and from the location, and helping make sure the day went as seamlessly as possible for the special needs adults and their families. Without the support of the Red Truck production team, none of this would have been remotely possible."When we debuted the commercials for the AAF-RDU members and the Wake Enterprises staff and participants, there wasn't a dry eye in the room," said Allen. "The work is beautiful, touching and expertly produced."

With a roster of award-winning directors based throughout the country, Red Truck Films produces spot work and non-traditional content, on location anywhere or on one of its two sound stages. WEBSTER UNIVERSITY AES SITE...
Webster University Student Section of the Audio Engineering Society presents the Third Annual Central Region AES Student Summit...

Webster University, Webster Groves, MO, March 6, 2009 - Riding on the success of both the first, ever, anywhere Student Summit two years ago, and an even more successful follow-up last year, the Webster University Student Section of the Audio Engineering Society (www.webster.edu/aes) presents the Third Annual Central Region AES Student Summit, April 3rd - 5th, 2009, at Webster University in St. Louis, MO (www.webster.edu/aes/info.htm).

Last year's Summit was a raging success, with hundreds of students, educators and audio professionals from eight states converging on Webster University. Confirmed speakers include Phil Ramone, John Storyk, Frank Filipetti, Jim Anderson, and many others as guest speakers. Students have been approaching manufacturers as exhibitors and sponsors, and many have already confirmed. Workshops and tutorials will be held on such topics as Internships and Entry Level Positions, the Future of Analog, Aesthetics, and Women in Audio, to name a few. Mirroring last year's event a Recording Competition is also planned.

The Summit is a great opportunity for students from the Central Region, some of whom cannot attend the conventions in New York or California, to mingle with their peers from other educational institutions as well as professionals. Participants will have the the opportunity to put their hands on gear, just like on the exhibition floor at the Javits or the Moscone Center.  Inexpensive accommodations have been arranged, and registration is practically free.

EVERYONE: go to the Webster AES website, www.webster.edu/aes, click on the Flier link, print it out and hang it up where students, teachers, and anyone who may be interested can see it. Got friends in other schools or businesses who may be interested? Forward this e-mail to them. Hang a flier in the campus radio station and in the airlock of the recording studio. Put one up by the video or film studios. Hang one in the local record store and the local radio station. Spread the word.

STUDENTS: If you want the cheap accommodations think about who you want your roommates to be. The suites sleep three people for $30 per night (that's for all three of you, not per person). Registration is now open, e-mail for a confirmation number. The cheap accommodations are limited, so don't wait. Information about everything is on the web site.

EDUCATORS and OTHER AUDIO PROFESSIONALS: Announce this event to your classes and co-workers, hang the flier where those who are interested will see it. Pass it along to other members of your AES chapter. Are you interested in making a presentation or participating in a panel? E-mail our Conference Chair, Shaun Wall at sou.agua@gmail.com, he will compile them and the students will choose the tutorials and panels soon. Interested in an ad in the program or an exhibitor's booth? E-mail Shaun. They're cheap, and you will have the opportunity to convince the next generation of gear purchasers that they should buy your stuff. Can't be here for a booth? There are plenty of other sponsorship opportunities, like things for the welcome bags or prizes for the recording competition. Even if you can't be here, your logo can! It's a great way to get your company's name out there. For information visit www.webster.edu/aes.
